Soma Side Effects

Soma is the name brand of a prescription drug that is categorized as a muscle relaxant. That is, it causes the skeletal muscles to relax and become less tense. It is mostly prescribed for muscle aches and pains due to overuse or other pain conditions as determined by your doctor. Soma, in its generic form is known as carisoprodol. It is available in tablets in 250 milligrams to 350 milligrams.

The side effects of Soma include sleepiness, drowsiness, and confusion. The side effects can occur as earl;y as ten to fifteen minutes after taking it, especially if taken on an empty stomach. If stomach upset occurs or onset of drowsiness comes on too quickly, it should be consumed with a meal.

Soma's side effect can be so strong, it should not be taken with any other medication, prescription or over the counter, unless directed to by a physician. Taking barbituates, tranquilizers or sleeping pills can increase teh sedating effects of Soma and should not be taken together unless directed by a physician. Drinking alcoholic beverages is contraindicated when taking Soma. Overdose or drug interaction with Soma can cause a decrease in breathing that can be fatal.

Because of Soma's expected side effect of sleepiness, it is often prescribed to take at bedtime. This side effect may, in fact, be desirable to someone whose pain has kept them awake at night. It will most likely induce sleep.

Soma should not be taken in a higher dose than prescribed. Soma should not be taken by someone to which it has not been prescribed. Side effects other than drowsiness or upset stomach, should be reported to the physician immediately.

Because of Soma's heavily sedating quality, it should not be taken by people who plan on using heavy machinery or driving. People taking it for the first time should see how they react to it before using any machinery. It should not be taken by children and should be kept of reach of children, like any other medication. If the sedating side effects are too undesirable to the patient, a lower dosage can be prescribed the dosage reduced.
